The application is at this link:  Comprehensive Exam Application

Instructions

  1. STEP 1: Apply for the comprehensive exam

The MSEM Academic Services Coordinator will review your course history to make sure you are eligible, then email you with information about what to do next.

To be eligible, a student must have completed/fulfilled 8 courses, including 5 required courses and must be in good academic standing.
  2. STEP 2: Complete a Network, webcam, and microphone test

Test your network connection, webcam, and microphone. *note* Use the same computer and connection for your test that you will be using on the day of your Comp Exam.
  3. STEP 3: Create a PowerPoint presentation AND Kaltura video at least 14 days prior to your desired exit interview.

Video must be between 8-10 minutes in length.

Your video must show both your screen/slides and your face when presenting.

If your Kaltura video presentation does not show both your screen and YOU presenting, or if your video does not fall between 8-10 minutes exactly, your exam materials will not be accepted and you will not be allowed to schedule your exam.

We strongly recommend you refer to the sample presentation provided in the Blackboard class when you sign up for the comprehensive exam, or available from your advisor.
  4. STEP 4: Upload your Kaltura Video and PowerPoint presentation to Blackboard.

The faculty committee will review your materials and grade the video as pass/fail.
  5. STEP 5: Schedule the Oral Interview

After you receive a "grade" for your video, you will be scheduled for an exit interview with a program director.

Introduction (2 minutes maximum):

  • Previous education: institution, major, special projects
  • Professional work experience

Body of presentation: Address each of the eight MSEM Program Outcomes.

  • Make eight chart/slides - one for each program outcome. Demonstrate how the course material has (or will) help you to achieve each of these program outcomes.
  • Use coursework, concepts used in case studies, class projects, or work experience to demonstrate your understanding of each outcome.
  • Each Program Outcome should be covered in approximately one minute.
  • Use this list of the eight MSEM Program Outcomes:

    1. Apply the technical and soft skills required to lead and manage diverse and inclusive, complex global engineering activities involving processes, technology, and a technical workforce to support the organization’s mission and vision.
    2. Use technology to develop plans, management systems, and innovative products and services to create value that are agile, resilient, and sustainable.
    3. Lead and manage multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural, geographically dispersed, agile teams, and projects.
    4. Identify problems, analyze engineering alternatives, and design solutions considering financial, environmental, and societal impact for the public good.
    5. Assess the financial implications of engineering programs.
    6. Use techniques and models to support data-driven decision-making involving significant future uncertainties about technologies, environment, demand.
    7. Assess legal, safety, regulatory, professional, and ethical organizational and individual responsibilities.
    8. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing to stakeholders and senior decision-makers.

Finally to close the presentation:

Discuss how the Ten Engineering Management Domains and the MSEM program curriculum will fit into your career plans and how it has complemented current or past work (1-2 minutes).

  • The Ten Engineering Management Domains include:
    • Intro to Engineering Management, Leadership, Strategic Planning & Management, Financial Management, Project Management, Quality Management, Operations and Supply Chain Management, Management of Technology/R&D, Systems Thinking & Engineering, Leagal Issues & Ethics.

To prepare for the exam, students should review the main ideas from each course taken and how they relate to the eight MSEM program outcomes. It is very helpful to keep textbooks and notes for each class. Some useful review techniques include re-reading class notes; making an outline of principal concepts from each course; preparing a glossary of key terms, theories, and leaders/ideas in specific fields. It is also helpful to review the Course Descriptions and Objectives from the courses you have taken.

Application must be completed by deadlines below.  Once the application is received, Advisors will verify the student’s eligibility before adding them to the Blackboard course where students submit comp exam materials.

  • Fall - November 1
  • Spring - April 1
  • Summer – June 15

Materials (video, PowerPoint, & unofficial transcript) must be submitted in blackboard by:

  • Fall - November 10
  • Spring - April 10
  • Summer – June 30

  • The oral portion of the exam is scheduled on a first come, first served basis so the earlier you submit your comprehensive exam materials to Blackboard, the earlier you will be able to schedule your exit interview.
  • The department will contact you after your PPT and Video have been accepted to help you schedule the exit interview portion of the exam. If you have questions about this process, please contact your advisor.
